A man was arrested in Mesa this past weekend and was booked into county jail on charges of child abuse. Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies discovered a 5-month-old baby girl crying and sweating in her car seat inside a locked Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The infant’s father, 28-year-old David Seimon, intentionally left her in a hot truck with the engine off, windows rolled up and doors locked. Seimon was arrested at the scene and is facing child abuse charges.
Deputies were dispatched to the area near 65th Street and University Drive in Mesa after hearing about a baby inside a vehicle in a parking lot around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. When they arrived at the scene 10 minutes later, they found the 5-month-old girl inside. The truck wasn’t running and the windows were rolled up.
While the deputies waited for fire department crews to arrive with tools to open the truck, the girl’s father left one of the apartments nearby and unlocked it. Deputies said the girl was “soaked in sweat and crying.”
Deputies questioned Seimon who told police he knowingly left his daughter in the truck while he went inside a friend’s home with his 2-year-old-son to grab a quick drink. Seimon said he thought about the temperature and thought it was about 80 degrees and that his infant daughter would be okay. According to Seimon’s statements to police, he claims he didn’t forget his daughter, but rather that she was sleeping and he didn’t want to wake her. Seimon added that he was keeping an eye on her through a window.
While questioning Seimon, deputies said they detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the apartment he was visiting. When police called Seimon’s wife to tell her about the situation she told them that David smoked marijuana every day and she did not like that. In the MCSO report, she was not at home during the offense, but was called to the scene to pick up the children.
Seimon faces one count of child abuse. The children are now with their mother.
